Atlantic Center for the Arts Master Artist In Residence Nicole Mitchell presented her Outreach concert at Timucua Arts on July 8th, 2019. With her were Doug Mathews and Anthony Cole, and for the finale, her Associates from ACA Residency # 174 for a newly minted piece: Border Parade.
Nicole Mitchell is both an innovator as composer and instrumentalist. She’s also a creative artist with organizational chops, as former chairwoman of Chicago’s (and now New York’s) esteemed, Jedi-like Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and, as of today- July 1st, the current William S. Dietrich II Endowed Chair in Jazz Studies at University Of Pittsburgh. Continue reading

Nels Cline is best known by his Clark Kent persona as the lead guitarist in Wilco. Cline is listed in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists as there doesn’t seem to be any boundaries in which to explore and innovate. Post-Coltrane lineage reed player Larry Ochs is cofounder of the 41 year-old ROVA Saxophone Quartet – ground floor influencers in the language of that now-accepted ensemble formation. Detroit native and University Of Michigan faculty member Gerald Cleaver moved to the Lion’s Den of NYC’s jazz scene to carve out a reputation as a first call drummer. The improvisational nature of jazz is the basis of this trio, while not necessarily the nature of their protean sonic offerings. Continue reading

Medeski, Martin And Wood drummer Billy Martin is the new Executive Director of the Woodstock, N.Y.’s Creative Music Studio, the music education non-profit founded by Karl Berger, Ingrid Sertso and Ornette Coleman in 1971. Karl, Ingrid and Billy come back to Orlando to teach and play during this February visit, joined by longtime Sam Rivers bassist Doug Mathews. Continue reading
