Filters for the Chemex Glass Coffeemaker- bought those from Amazon using credit card points. They were free. No need to mitigate that Buy Local guilt, right? Miller’s Hardware in Winter Park- a quirky, throwback local that everyone should witness- had the coffeemaker, but no separate filters. Addendum 11/16/14: Chemex filters are back at Miller’s and at a price that pips Amazon.
Park Avenue Records, Homegrown Co-op, Lineage Coffee Roasters, Artichoke Red, Local Roots, Skyebird Juice Bar, Se7en Bites, Bookmark It, Etoile Boutique and Fresh 24- these are some one-of-a-kinders full of genuine people keeping that seventy-some cents of each dollar in our town. We admire the dichotomy of the strength of the local everything in one of the most corporate Designated Marketing Areas (DMA, player) in the U.S.A.
You don’t need to have this internal dialogue to buy a consumer something. If you need a homestead analog for the unbleached, specifically sized coffee filters, there’s no more a one-act, pushbutton, Commerce Play than Amazon.
Countenence for soulful local businesses- check. Amazon is the golem’s golem- check.
